Facelift

An expertly performed facelift will make you look like a well-rested and more youthful version of yourself.

Facelift and neck lift are among the most popular procedures in plastic surgery.

They are considered the gold standard for rejuvenating the aging face.

When performed correctly, these procedures reduce the sagging of the tissues of the cheeks, jawline, and neck that occurs with age.

By seeking surgical help, you can ensure that your skin continues to defy the test of time.

Facelifts can help keep your skin firm and give you a youthful appearance.

Reversing The Signs of Aging

Over time, our skin becomes less elastic as collagen and elastin production decreases.

Gravity and time also affect our facial muscles and their retaining ligaments, causing them to loosen.

Our mid-facial tissues sag, leading to the formation of deep nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and jowls along the jawline.

Laxity of the platysma muscles develops in the upper neck, resulting in visible vertical bands and severe sagging of the skin in the submental region, commonly known as “turkey gobble.”

Patients considering such a procedure often complain of appearing sad and tired.

Contrary to popular belief, a face and neck lift does not attempt to stretch sagging skin but rather to tighten and restore the compromised tissue to its original, more youthful position.

The goal, then, is to achieve a harmonious, natural, refreshed appearance rather than the impression that the skin has been pulled tight.

Patients usually report looking several years younger, and satisfaction with the procedure is high.

What Is a Rhytidectomy?

A rhytidectomy or facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reduces sagging skin on the cheeks or jawline.

A facelift is a surgical procedure that helps to address the natural sagging of the skin that occurs with age.

Over time, your skin usually becomes less elastic and tends to sag on your face.

Loose skin around the neck and face is a clear sign of aging. Facelifts do not reduce the cracks or wrinkles in your skin.

They help tighten pockets of sagging skin that have developed over time.

In a facelift, the skin is pulled back to contour your face resulting in a more youthful look. Sometimes a neck lift is done simultaneously to reduce the amount of sagging on the neck.

Natural Ways to Boost Skin Elasticity

Facelifts and most cosmetic surgeries are typically performed to restore a person’s youthful appearance.

One of the main reasons sagging skin occurs is due to a lack of elasticity in the skin.

You can improve the elasticity of your skin by eating a diet rich in greens, fatty fish, citrus fruits, and broccoli.

These foods will help improve the health of your skin.

Improving the elasticity of your skin cannot erase your jowls or sagging skin and tissue displacement. Changing your diet can help you get a fresh start.

This fresh start can come in the form of a facelift.

Benefits of Facelifts & Neck Lifts

Over time, your skin becomes less elastic. Due to decreasing elasticity, excess skin can be a byproduct of weight loss or simply aging.

Facelifts offer a number of benefits that can help you feel more comfortable and confident in your skin.

Combat the Signs of Aging

As you age, the quality and fullness of your skin decrease.

This is due to the thinning of skin tissue and loss of elasticity in your face.

The symptoms of aging can become more noticeable due to hereditary conditions, stress, smoking, or sun damage.

If your face has developed excess skin flaps over time, you should consider a facelift.

This surgery can help to displace your facial fat and tighten sagging skin around your face.

Contours Your Jawline

Many women spend hours every day contouring their faces with highlighters and contouring products.

To achieve a contoured look without makeup, a facelift can help redefine your jawline.

A strong jawline can help sharpen your overall facial features and give you a youthful appearance.

A strong jawline is often associated with dominance and can make anyone feel strong and confident.

No Visible Surgical Scars

Many surgical procedures leave permanent scars; however, cosmetic procedures such as a rhytidectomy are designed to leave no visible scars.

The virtual absence of visible scars can erase any outward signs of a medical procedure.

You can keep your youthful skin plump and flawless without having to use makeup to hide a long-lasting scar.

Removes deep wrinkles

Over time, deep wrinkles and lines can form on your face due to excess skin and loss of volume in tissue structures.

A facelift can be used as a cosmetic tool to address these deep wrinkles and volumize the tissue structures of your face.

A side effect of aging is the loss of tissue structure and elasticity in the face.

Cosmetic surgeries, such as facelifts, help to restore the deep tissue structures to their proper position.

Surgery can recreate the effects of skin elasticity that a younger face would naturally have.

Enhances Your Natural Features

Few people think of a facelift as a way to improve your natural facial features.

There are many negative stigmas associated with cosmetic surgery that give people an operated or “plastic” appearance.

Facelifts are a tool to help you rediscover the natural facial features you already have.

Facelift scars are easy to hide, and facelift techniques build on the facial structure you already have.

Instead of reshaping you, facelifts help you enhance your facial features.

Risks of Facelift Surgery

No surgery is without potential risk or complication.

With proper care, medications, and a well-trained surgical team, you can reduce the risk of surgical complications.

Some of the main risks associated with a facelift include hematoma, scarring, nerve injury, or hair loss.

Side effects like these are incredibly rare.

A hematoma is the collection of blood under the skin that can cause swelling or skin discoloration. Typically, this occurs immediately after surgery.

Facelift incision scars are permanent and are usually located in hidden areas, leaving no visible scars.

However, surgical incisions can cause red scars or irritation that require appropriate treatment and recovery care.

Due to the irritation from the incision scars, your skin may become irritated, and you may experience temporary or permanent hair loss around the incision sites.

Over time, these hairs may grow back or be replaced by hair plugs.

Be sure to consult your surgeon and primary care physician if you experience any unwanted side effects after your procedure.

Who is a Good Candidate?

The decision to undergo a facelift is yours to make. However, your surgeon can help you find the ideal candidate for a facelift.

Any type of surgery requires good general health upfront, so you need to inform your surgeon of any pre-existing medical conditions that may prevent you from opting for cosmetic surgery.

Prior to a surgical procedure, your skin should be in good condition and have some degree of elasticity. By being somewhat elastic, the skin should be able to recover after manipulation during surgery.

Ideal candidates are in good health and have no underlying conditions that would interfere with wound healing. Smokers are encouraged to refrain from smoking.

Patients with underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, etc., are strongly advised to have these under control.

Patients ideally have a stable weight and maintain a balanced diet. Mental and spiritual well-being are also desirable for individuals seeking face and neck lift procedures.

A positive attitude and realistic expectations can only increase the likelihood of a satisfactory result.

Let’s say your skin has some damage from years of smoking or sun exposure.

In this case, this may affect the success of a facelift. During a consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will also look at your underlying bone structure.

Your bone structure is the foundation for any facelift. It must be considered when planning a surgical procedure.

Surgeons use the patient’s face to outline markers for the surgical path.

Although your age won’t prevent you from undergoing surgery, your overall health could play a role.

If you are going to undergo cosmetic surgery, such as a facelift, make sure you are in good health.

Be sure to get a clearance from your primary care physician.

During the consultation, you need to have an open and honest dialog with your plastic surgeon.

Types of Facelifts and Neck Lifts

Lelux Hospital offers a variety of facial lips to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

With advanced technology and experienced surgeons, Wave can perform procedures with small incisions, minimal scarring, and a fast healing process.

Depending on your surgical needs, a surgical consultant may recommend one of the following facelifts:

  • Endoscopic Mid-Facelift
  • Endoscopic Facelift
  • Face and Neck Lift
  • High Extended SMAS
  • Face and Neck Lift

These procedures can be customized to help you feel strong and confident in your skin. Lelux’s surgical team is committed to working with you to meet your cosmetic needs.

Endoscopic Mid-FaceLift

The endoscopic mid-facelift uses endoscopic technology to reduce the size of incisions and work through an endoscope to remove excess skin.

The mid-facelift targets the area between the lower eyelids and mouth to reverse the effects of aging and gravity.

Normally, muscles pull this skin down and can make your cheeks look saggy.

A mid-facelift is designed to help restore fullness to your skin and give you a more youthful appearance.

By focusing on the cheeks and eyelid area, surgeons can medically enhance your face. This surgery is performed with a small incision above the ear or through the upper lip.

An endoscope and surgical instruments are used to lift the tissue in the center of the face away from the cheekbones.

The tissue is pulled and moved toward the eyes and ears. Because this procedure is performed endoscopically, there is a short recovery time and minimal swelling.

Endoscopic Facelift

Lelux’s surgeons have developed an exclusive procedure to address the first signs of aging in the mid or lower face.

This fully endoscopic facelift is minimally invasive and allows patients to experience rejuvenated skin and minimal recovery time.

During an endoscopic procedure, surgical tools and a camera with an endoscope are inserted into an incision site. This allows the surgeon to perform the procedure without fully opening the surgical site.

The surgeon can view the surgical site through a monitor and guide the instruments through the small incision in the patient’s face.

At Wave, this is done with a small incision site behind the patient’s ear in their hairline.

This procedure takes only an hour and uses small incision sites to move tissue and tighten skin that may be losing its elasticity.

Face and Neck Lift

This procedure is a quick, outpatient procedure that produces long-term results.

After years of stress and aging, the skin on the neck and jawline can begin to sag.

This procedure tightens these areas by penetrating deep into your tissues.

A face and neck lift naturally repositions the deeper tissues. This surgery removes excess fat and helps tighten the jawline. It can help fight aging while ensuring that the results look natural.

This procedure has a quick two-week recovery time and can be performed under local anesthesia.

High Extended SMAS Face and Neck Lift

The High Extended SMAS Face and Neck Lift is a comprehensive procedure that addresses all of the sagging skin in your mid to lower face.

This surgery tightens the tissue under your skin and repositions your facial structure to give you an age-appropriate appearance.

This facelift procedure will help address your jowls, smile lines, and sagging skin in your neck and jawline. This surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia.

The plastic surgeon will make incisions at your hairline to reach the subdermal tissue.

Preparing for Surgery

Suppose you have decided that you want to undergo cosmetic surgery. In this case, you will want to find a specialist in your area and seek advice.

It is important to discuss with your primary care physician if you are taking any medications that might prevent you from having cosmetic surgery.

Get a Consultation

When you come in for a consultation, make sure your medical history is up to date. This way, your surgeon can ask for up-to-date information and address any concerns about your suitability for surgery.

One of the main reasons it is important to consult your primary care physician is to see if any of the prescription medications you are taking may affect your qualification for cosmetic surgery.

During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will take pictures of your face from different angles.

These images will be used to create a mock-up of the procedure.

During the consultation, the patient’s overall health will be reviewed, and the condition of the facial skin, the degree of laxity of the face and neck, and the quality of the skin will be examined.

A facelift cannot reduce fine skin wrinkles or sun damage, but other cosmetic procedures, such as laser resurfacing, can be performed at the same time or shortly after the procedure to address them.

Steps for a Facelift Surgery

Facelifts can be performed in a clinic or in an outpatient surgical facility.

If you are looking for a high-quality facelift at a low cost and with minimal recovery time, choosing an outpatient facility, such as Wave Plastic Surgery, is a great option.

Administer Anesthesia

Endoscopic or not, a facelift is a multi-step procedure performed under anesthesia. Medications are administered to increase patient comfort and eliminate patient sensitivity to the surgical site.

Cosmetic surgeries such as a facelift can be performed under local or general anesthesia. It is at the discretion of the surgical team which type of anesthesia is best for the patient.

Local anesthesia is applied to a small area of the body that is numbed while the patient remains fully conscious and is typically performed for minor outpatient procedures.

With general anesthesia, the patient is completely unconscious and unaware of the procedures. It is usually performed for longer surgeries or when the patient is afraid of surgery.

Make Incisions

Surgical incisions are made to allow the surgical team access to the subdermal tissues on the face.

Depending on the degree of changing the patient desires, the incision site may vary.

Generally, the incision begins at the temples in the hairline, continues down and around the front of the ears, ends behind the ear, and finally runs along the back of the hairline.

The skin flap is elevated, and the underlying muscle layer is addressed.

This layer is commonly referred to as the SMAS, a fibrous fatty structure that surrounds and supports the facial muscle.

By tightening this layer, the facial tissues are restored to their proper anatomical position.

The facial skin is then stretched over the repositioned facial contours, and excess skin is removed.

Depending on how extensive the procedure is desired by the patient, smaller incisions may be made.

An incision may also be made under the chin to remove fat and tighten the supporting neck muscles.

For a moderate or less dramatic facelift, surgeons may make a limited incision.

This incision would run along with the ear, giving the surgical team access to tissue located in the center of the face.

The biggest changes from this surgery will be seen along the cheekbones.

Closing Incisions

After the operation is completed, the surgical team closes the areas with sutures, which may have to be removed or dissolve after a few days – the incision areas of the facelift are well hidden in the patient’s hairline and facial folds.

A moderately tight bandage is applied after surgery to reduce swelling and post-operative bleeding. Drains are also used by most surgeons to remove tissue fluid from under the skin flaps.

This results in less bruising and consequently less swelling and a faster recovery.

Once you are stitched up, you can be on the road to recovery.

Recovery Period

Patients are usually discharged home under supervision on the day of the procedure. Patients are encouraged to rest in a comfortable environment with their heads elevated to reduce swelling.

We usually see patients again a day or two after surgery to remove drains and apply fresh dressings. The compression garment is worn regularly for two weeks or longer.

Patients can begin to resume modest public activities after one to two weeks. Swelling will be present for up to four weeks. Full recovery occurs after four to six weeks, but you may continue to notice changes for up to six months.

Endoscopic and outpatient procedures usually have a short recovery time. It is normal to experience short-term symptoms immediately after any type of surgery.

Immediately after the facelift procedure, you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Moderate pain
  • Skin irritation
  • Drainage at the incision sites
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Numbness

Be sure to contact your surgical team if any of these symptoms become unbearable or persist after the first few days of recovery.

Your surgical team will likely give you medications or suggest treatment to curb the side effects and help you deal with irritation after surgery.

The day after surgery may be the most difficult for you. Once the residual anesthesia wears off, you may feel very sore and need pain medication to manage the discomfort.

It is likely that you will feel weak and drained for a few days after surgery. It is important that you keep your head in an elevated position and take any medications your doctor specifies.

Stay in touch with your surgical team to schedule follow-up appointments. They will get in to change surgical dressings, remove sutures, assess incisions, and make sure the healing process is going well.

After the first few days have passed, you should no longer need pain medication and should feel back to normal. If your pain remains at a high level, it is important that you contact your doctor.

You will not be able to see the final results of your cosmetic surgery until bruising and swelling have subsided and the healing process is nearly complete.
